Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty and septoplasty are both surgical procedures that involve the nose, but they address different concerns and have distinct goals.

What is a Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job,” is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at reshaping or resizing the nose to improve its appearance and harmony with other facial features. Rhinoplasty can address various aesthetic concerns, such as a dorsal hump, nasal width or asymmetry, nasal tip projection or droop, and overall nasal proportions. During the rhinoplasty procedure, the bone, cartilage, and soft tissues of the nose may be modified to achieve the desired cosmetic outcome or improve airflow. A rhinoplasty may be performed with or without a septoplasty.

What is Septoplasty?

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure specifically focused on correcting a deviated or displaced nasal septum. The nasal septum is the partition that divides the nasal cavity into two chambers. Septoplasty aims to straighten and reposition the septum to improve nasal airflow and alleviate associated symptoms. Unlike rhinoplasty, septoplasty primarily addresses functional issues rather than cosmetic concerns, although it may be performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty to address both functional and aesthetic concerns simultaneously. A septoplasty may be performed with or without a rhinoplasty.

Am I a Candidate for Rhinoplasty or Septoplasty?

Candidates for rhinoplasty or septoplasty typically include individuals who are unhappy with the appearance of their nose, experiencing breathing difficulties due to a deviated septum, or seeking correction for nasal trauma or congenital abnormalities. Ideal candidates should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the procedures.

What Can I Expect During the Consultation Process?

During your initial consultation, Dr. Desrosiers will evaluate your nasal anatomy, discuss your goals and concerns, and recommend a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the procedures, recovery process, and expected results.

What is the Recovery Like After Rhinoplasty or Septoplasty?

The recovery period following rhinoplasty or septoplasty varies from patient to patient but generally involves some discomfort and swelling. Some patients may also experience bruising around the nose and eyes. During the first 1-2 weeks, patients will often have nasal stents inside the nose; nasal stents are internal tubes that support the nose.

In terms of returning to usual activities, most patients can return to work and normal activities within 1-2 weeks, although contact sports should be avoided for an extended period. For patients involved in sports such as basketball or volleyball, a custom nose guard may be required for up to a year.

How Long Do the Results of Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty Last?

The results of rhinoplasty and septoplasty are long-lasting and can be permanent. However, it’s essential to keep in mind that the nose will continue to age naturally over time. For those interested in how the nose ages, here are two interesting articles.

Does a Rhinoplasty or Septoplasty Leave Scars?

In a closed rhinoplasty or a closed septoplasty, the incisions are made inside the nostrils. This obfuscates the usual external scars associated with an open rhinoplasty. With an open rhinoplasty or open septoplasty, a small incision is made at the base of the nose (across the columella). Typically, this leaves a faint scar that heals well and becomes barely noticeable over time.
