Male Gynecomastia Surgery

Male breast reduction is a surgical solution designed to assist men dealing with excess breast tissue or gynecomastia, an enlargement of the breasts. This condition can affect men at any age and may result from hormonal changes, weight fluctuations, medication usage, or genetic factors. Beyond addressing the physical aspects, this procedure can significantly enhance chest appearance, fostering increased self-confidence and self-esteem.

The technique involves the removal of surplus fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the chest area, employing liposuction, excision, or a combination of both methods. During the procedure, the surgeon makes small incisions around the areola or under the arm, using a thin tube called a cannula to suction out fat. If excess glandular tissue or skin is present, the surgeon will excise it and reshape the chest contour before closing the incisions with stitches and applying bandages.

What is the downtime for gynecomastia?

Most patients can return to work after a few days if it’s a desk job. Strenuous activity generally cannot be resumed for 2-6 weeks, depending on the extent of the procedure performed. Additionally, most patients are required to wear a compression tank top shirt under their clothes for the first 2-6 weeks. This helps with tissue retraction. After 6 weeks, if there is insufficient tissue retraction, a follow-up procedure can generally be done in the office to remove any remaining excess skin.
