Deep Plane Neck Lift

What Type of Neck Lifts Are There?

Cervicoplasty and platysmaplasty are both surgical procedures aimed at improving the appearance of the neck, but they target different aspects of neck aging and may be performed separately or in combination, depending on the patient’s needs.

Cervicoplasty specifically focuses on removing excess skin from the neck to address sagging or loose skin, often referred to as “turkey neck” or “neck wattle.” During a cervicoplasty, the surgeon makes discreet incisions typically behind the ears and possibly under the chin, through which excess skin is excised. The remaining skin is then repositioned and tightened to create a smoother and more youthful neck contour.

Platysmaplasty targets the underlying muscles of the neck, specifically the platysma muscle, which can become lax and form vertical bands or cords as a result of aging or genetic factors. During a platysmaplasty, the surgeon accesses the platysma muscle through small incisions under the chin or behind the ears and may use techniques such as muscle tightening, muscle repositioning, or muscle division to address muscle laxity and create a firmer neck appearance.

In some cases, cervicoplasty and platysmaplasty may be performed together as part of a comprehensive neck lift procedure to achieve optimal results. Combining these techniques allows for simultaneous correction of both excess skin and muscle laxity, resulting in a more rejuvenated and harmonious neck contour. Extended dissection neck lifts almost always combine both cervicoplasty and platysmaplasty.

How Long Does a Neck Lift Last?

It depends on the type of neck lift performed. Extended dissection cervicoplasty and platysmaplasty combined with a deep plane face lift may last between 10 to 15 years on average depending on age and other health conditions. This approach provides longer lasting results when compared to less extensive procedures that may only produce benefits for an estimated 5-10 years.

It’s important to note that while the initial results of the procedure are long-lasting, the aging process continues over time. Thus, some degree of natural aging and changes in facial/neck appearance may occur gradually following the procedure. However, even as the years pass, patients often retain a more youthful and refreshed appearance compared to if they had not undergone a neck lift.

To maximize the longevity of the results, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including proper skincare, sun protection, and avoiding smoking, can help preserve the effects of a neck lift for as long as possible. Additionally, some patients may choose to undergo maintenance procedures, such as non-invasive treatments (e.g., regular Botox® treatments, chemical peels, or Ellacor®), to further enhance and prolong their rejuvenated look.

Where are the Scars for a Neck Lift?

Where scars are placed depends on the patient’s anatomy and surgical goals. However, some of the most common areas where incisions are made, include:

  • In the hair line behind the ear
  • In the hair line above the ear
  • Inside the ear or along the junction between the ear and the face
  • Under the chin

Scars placed in the hairline are generally not easily visualized. Further, instead of placing the scar fully in front of the ear, Dr. Desrosiers can place an incision behind the tragus cartilage of the ear. This helps make the incision sites less visible.

How Does Dr. Desrosiers Help Ensure the Best Neck Lift Scars Possible?

To help ensure the best scar outcome, Dr. Desrosiers employs a meticulous approach. First, understanding each patient’s unique response to sutures is important. During the consultation, Dr. Desrosiers and his staff will seek to understand your medical history, including any prior procedures and experiences with stitch abscesses or rejection, to tailor the surgical approach accordingly. Second, Dr. Desrosiers uses preoperative photos and markings while standing and sitting, referring back to the photos intraop and then uses a tailor tacking approach to deliver precision and beauty. Third, Dr. Desrosiers may utilize slowly dissolving or permanent sutures beneath the skin to prevent scar widening until wound remodeling has transformed weak Type 3 collagen into more robust type 1 collagen. Fourth, Dr. Desrosiers always requires the use of compression garments, not only to alleviate swelling but also to provide support to the tissues, minimizing tension on the scar line. Lastly, our practice offers cutting-edge treatments such as advanced silicone scar gels and laser scar therapies, which have shown remarkable efficacy in promoting seamless scar formation for many patients.
